How to Make Vanilla Oil

There are 2 methods to make your own Vanilla Oil. I ordered a Vanilla Essential Oil from Revive, I tried adding it to a recipe, but it didn’t work as well as I thought it would or should. It also smelled like Vanilla Extract.

The method I chose to do was the Hot Infusion Method. The first time I made it I thought the mixture would evaporate and I would be left with only half of what I started out with. This did not happen. Mine didn’t evaporate at all. It only takes 3-4 hours to make and your home will smell amazing while its brewing.

Ingredients:Vanilla EO

  • 2 Organic Vanilla Pods
  • 6 – 8 oz Organic Jojoba Oil

The Cold Infusion Method

  • Add 2 organic vanilla pods sliced thin to the 8-ounce canning jar.
  • Pour 6 ounces of organic coconut, safflower or jojoba oil into the jar. Tighten the lid onto the jar.
  • Set the jar with the oil and vanilla pods on a shelf in the sun. Write the date you combined the ingredients on the lid of the jar.
  • Wait two months for the cold infusion to work.
  • Pour the liquid ingredients into a bowl or jug covered with cheesecloth dipped a bit inside the container and fitted securely with string or a rubber band around the rim.
  • Discard the vanilla pods after squeezing them between the layers of the cheesecloth.
  • Add a funnel to the small glass storage bottle and fill it with the essential oil. Tighten the lid and label the jar with the ingredients and the date before storing it in a cool dark place.

The Hot Infusion Method (My Choice)

Directions:

  • Pour 6-8 oz of Jojoba oil into large measuring cup and sit in a pot of boiling water. Make sure the water is only about 1/4 of the way full. You don’t want it bubbling into the oil.
  • Cut up 2 vanilla pods into 1/4-inch to 1/2-inch sized pieces.
  • Add 6-8 ounces of your chosen organic oil to the measuring cup and sprinkle the vanilla pods into the oil. Mix them into the oil with a wooden spoon.
  • Heat the oil and vanilla pods for 3-4 hours, as the water gently simmers.
  • Pour the mixture back into the original containers and label and date them and store in a dark, cool place, such as in a pantry or cupboard for up to one year. You will have 6-9 oz of vanilla oil.

Hint: Makes your home smell amazing. Use in your face creams, deodorants, hand sanitizers, shaving lotions etc. I left the little black seeds in my oil and just used a spatula to get the bigger pieces of the vanilla pod out. I did not use a cheese cloth.
